FAUBOURG MARIGNY / BYWATER
Apple Barrel Bar
609 Frenchmen St.
949-9399
When bar-hoppers get worn out by walking up and down Frenchmen Street,
they often retreat to this cozy neighborhood bar. It offers blues
or contemporary jazz acts nightly with good stiff drinks, and funky
charm.
Blue Nile
534 Frenchmen St.
948-BLUE
The music rolls out of the Blue Nile's open door every night, with
the lively funk of brass bands, the shaking pulse of reggae, or the
sensuous Latin beats of Fredy Omar, which are often accompanied by
free salsa lessons.
Buffa's Lounge
1001 Esplanade Ave.
949-0038
No cover.
The kitchen churns out greasy burgers and reasonable daily specials
(usually meat, potatoes and a salad for (about $ 6) and red beans
and rice and shrimp po- boys for five bucks a person. It is worth
knowing about if you are interested in the neighborhood's down to
earth side.
Cafe Brasil
2100 Chartres St.
949-0851
If a popular band such as the Iguanas is playing, then it's strictly
standing and dancing inside -- under cramped conditions. Tables line
the sidewalk, though, and the music pours through the open doors.
On a hot night it may be far more pleasant to hang and dance outside.
Modern jazz and experimental theater draw smaller crowds of serious
listeners who sit at comfortably spaced tables. All kinds of music
and people come to this bohemian hot spot, and it's also a popular
place to show off costumes on Mardi Gras
Checkpoint Charlie's
501 Esplanade Ave.
949-7012
This bustling corner bar draws young locals who shoot pool and listen
to blues and rock -- 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There's also a
paperback library and a fully functioning laundromat.
d.b.a.
618 Frenchmen St.
942-3731
No cover.
A little slice of New York City comes as this southern branch of New
York's East Village hot spot. The place has a rough-and-ready feel
more typical of New Orleans bars, but the fine alcohol selection,
including a plethora of liquors, is unparalleled. Serious bands sometimes
play in the back corner.
Dragon's Den
435 Esplanade Ave.
949-1750
This most bohemian of music cafes, above a Thai restaurant, provides
pillows on the floor and hosts live music most every night.
Mimi's
2601 Royal Street
942-0690
Open very late (at least 2am but variable) every night A relatively
new bar with a very friendly local, bohemian crowd. A small but good
selection of beers is available on tap.
R Bar
1431 Royal St.
948-7499
A jukebox full of classic rock entertains this eclectic bar. A variety
of locals drift through here late at night for games of pool and swirl
atop leopard-print bar stools in an intimate but smoky environment.
Snug Harbor
626 Frenchmen St.
949-0696
This intimate club is one of the city's best for modern jazz, blues,
and R&B. It is the home base of such talent as vocalist Charmaine
Neville and pianist Ellis Marsalis (father of Wynton and Branford).
The dining room serves good local food but is best known in town for
its burgers. Note: one can listen to the band from the bar without
paying the rather high cover charge.
Spotted Cat
623 Frenchmen St.
943-3887
The Spotted Cat is right in the middle of the Frenchmen Street scene.
Solo acoustic performers play on a small, intimate stage. Late night
often finds a host of local musicians ending up there after doing
their gigs elsewhere, leading to some exciting spontaneous collaborations.
Sweet Lorraine's
1931 St. Claude Ave.
945-9654
www.SweetLorrainesJazzClub.com
"We feature the best in local, national, and international jazz
artists with blues, Latin, and New Orleans' sounds. Our plush setting
also offers late-night dining every Friday, Saturday & Sunday

Frenchmen vibe comes alive and the jukebox keeps you moving at the
Spanish cedar-wood, custom-built bar.

ports, reserved bourbons, and premium cigars.

529-2583
Despite its name, blues is a relatively small component in the booking
policy, which also embraces rock, jazz, country, soul, funk, world
music, and more, performed by everyone from local artists to international
touring acts. A gospel brunch is a rousing Sunday staple. In the bar
you can absorb blues history on CD-ROM and take in an assortment of
Southern folk art. The adjoining restaurant has an eclectic menu,
including vegetarian dishes and classic Southern cuisine, served in
ample portions at reasonable prices. The Parish, a smaller, more intimate
offshoot upstairs from the main house, sometimes hosts local groups.
Lafitte's Blacksmith Bar

by local and regional blues, rock, and zydeco performers afternoon
and night. Menu items such as the "Cheeseburger in Paradise"
derive from Buffett songs, and several varieties of the salt-rimmed
signature drink are served. Decor consists mainly of Buffett photos,
and the man himself does appear occasionally.

Preservation Hall
726 St. Peter St.
522-2841 or 523-8939
The name of this tiny club is almost synonymous with traditional jazz
in New Orleans. It's beautiful in its bare simplicity ... you come
here to hear jazz. All the greats have played here since the club
was opened by the late Allan Jaffe in 1960, and here you'll hear the
finest traditional jazz in its purest form. There is limited seating
-- many patrons end up sitting on the floor or standing in back --
and no beverages are allowed. But it is a fabulous New Orleans experience.

locals. A mix of alternative rock, hip-hop, Latin music, and progressive
country fills the schedule. Visiting musicians often hang out and
may sit in.
Lucy's Retired Surfers Bar & Restaurant
701 Tchoupitoulas St.
523-8995
Lucy's oddly doubles as a California-inspired eating spot for many
young professionals during the day and as a hangout for the same group
of people during the evening. Visit this tiki bar at night to chow
on chips and salsa and sip cerveza.
Lion's Den
2655 Gravier St.
821-3745
Miss Irma Thomas' club, it's only open when she's performing.
Mermaid Lounge
1102 Constance St.
524-4747
This funky but chic hangout under the overpass to the Mississippi
River Bridge presents a wide variety of acts, including local rock,
funk, brass bands, and classic country. It is not easy to find this
place: take Tchoupitoulas Street away from the French Quarter; as
you approach the overpass, jag right onto Annunciation and turn right
on John Churchill Chase. The club is a block ahead on the left.
Michaul's Live Cajun Music Restaurant
840 St. Charles Ave.
522-5517
Spacious and homey, Michaul's has a huge dance floor on which patient
teachers give free Cajun dance lessons until around 11 PM nightly
except Sunday, mostly to visitors, though locals check it out from
time to time. The Cajun food is authentic if not inventive.

bowling alley- music club near Uptown, in Mid-City. Dancers may spill
over into the lanes when a favorite band such as zydeco legend Boozoo
Chavis takes the stage. Blues, R&B, rock, swing, and Cajun music
are all presented. Thursdays are zydeco nights, bringing the best
musicians in from rural Louisiana.

Dos Jefes Uptown Cigar Bar
5535 Tchoupitoulas St.
891-8500
Maple Leaf
8316 Oak St.
866-9359
An absolute institution, the Maple Leaf presses middle-school science
teachers together with the latest crop from Tulane University, meanwhile
accommodating everything in between. Down-home and funky, with pressed-tin
walls and overworked ceiling fans, this atmospheric place hosts blues,
zydeco, R&B, and more. The Rebirth Brass Band has held court here
every Tuesday night for the past 15 years; the gig is an essential
part of many locals' social routines. There's a romantic, tropical
patio out back, and the sidewalk out front is often filled with locals
in the know. Poetry readings are held on Sunday at 3 PM. Although
the club is only a few blocks from the Oak and Carrollton streetcar
stop, it's best to take a cab.
Muddy Water's
8301 Oak Street
866-717

and Runnin' Pardners, and Cyril Neville & the Uptown All-Stars.
Located across the street and about half a block from the Maple Leaf.
Red Room
2040 St. Charles Ave.
528-9759
Many New Orleanians remember the Restaurant de la Tour Eiffel, which
was in a St. Charles Avenue building constructed from metalwork that
originally housed the restaurant on the deuxième etage of the
Eiffel Tower. Years later, this unique structure was converted to
the oh-so-swank Red Room. Live music is played nightly in the octagonal
main dining room; piano music begins at 6:30 PM, followed by main-stage
acts at 8 PM. Swing, salsa, and tango dance nights are frequent here.
Arrive early for contemporary cuisine: steaks, fish, and chops come
with ambitious sauces. Dress nicely: T-shirts, jeans, shorts, and
tennis shoes are not allowed. Valet parking is available, although
the club is on the streetcar line.
Rendon Inn
4501 Eve Street
Popular with the Uptown college (Tulane students).
Tipitina's
501 Napoleon Ave.
897-3943
The original Tip's was founded in the mid-1970s as the home base for
Professor Longhair, the pioneering rhythm-and-blues pianist and singer
who died in 1980; the club takes its name from one of his most popular
songs. As the multitude of concert posters on the walls indicates,
Tip's hosts a wide variety of local and global acts. For about a decade
Bruce Daigrepont has played a weekly Cajun dance on Sunday 5 PM-9
PM; free red beans and rice are served.
